"Protection criteria have evolved to better accommodate mental health challenges, and there are more options than people may think."

Of those surveyed (1,000), 11% admitted to not having yet applied – or being worried about applying – for protection due to uncertainty on how to purchase a plan or who to approach for advice. Notably, this uncertainty was felt the most by 16–24-year-olds (22%), with just 5% of those aged 55 or above feeling uncertain about protection.

Furthermore, one in ten (10%) admitted that they feel deterred from protection due to the risk of rejection; talking to families, friends, and advisers about the importance of protection and how to purchase it could help many take that final step towards peace of mind.

“Protection is designed to provide people with peace of mind, for when the worst happens. Finding protection can be daunting for many, but talking about it can ease the anxiety. Our research reveals that many hesitate due to uncertainty or fear of rejection,” said Justin Harper, Chief Marketing Officer at LifeSearch.
