Practical Protection Podcast: Sickle Cell

Hi everyone. We are back to health conditions with our latest podcast and focusing on access insurance when you have sickle cell disease. Sickle cell is a term given to a group of inherited conditions that affect the blood, which leads to the red blood cells having a sickle-like appearance. They are almost a bit boomerang shaped.

"For some people, sickle cell can lead to some specific complications that can make getting insurance trickier."

For many people, sickle cell is a condition that they can live with and control well, without it causing them any specific difficulties in their ability to work or do day-to-day tasks. But for some people, sickle cell can lead to some specific complications that can make getting insurance trickier.

A key thing is to know what type of sickle cell a person has and also if they actually have it, or if they are just carrying the gene for it. This can make a huge difference to the options you can get for life insurance, critical illness cover and income protection.

There’s a case study at the end of the podcast about a person needing £1m of life insurance who was living with sickle cell.
