In April 2024, Swiss Re launched an augmented version of its Life & Health underwriting manual which has been continually ranked the industry’s #1 global underwriting manual based on the NMG Consulting study. This new version is accompanied by Swiss Re’s Life Guide Scout, which is a Generative Artificial Intelligence-powered (AI) underwriting assistant that integrates Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service.

At the time, Julien Descombes, Chief Underwriter Officer of Life & Health at Swiss Re, said “We’re excited to bring Generative AI to our clients who can now leverage this new feature to improve their underwriting process. Our ambition is to provide insurers access to the risk perspective we have built into Life Guide in an even more efficient and user-friendly way.”

Today, Swiss Re has announced enhancements to its coronary artery disease (CAD) calculator which is now available to over 25k Life Guide users from eight hundred companies across the globe. This updated CAD calculator significantly streamlines the underwriting process, allowing underwriters to assess the appropriate premium commensurate with the risk presented by an individual’s cardiovascular health.

The calculator guides the underwriter through the assessment of adverse factors in an underwriting case, including CAD diagnosis, event history, types of treatment, or comorbidities.

This latest update includes a new user-friendly interface that consolidates CAD ratings from Life Guide. Underwriters also have access to an interactive, three-dimensional (3D) heart model to better visualise the risk.

Swiss Re’s CAD calculator is one of the many improvements the reinsurer intends to make following its annual review of Life Guide. Other updates include new rating pages in line with the latest medical research & significant improvements to Life Guide’s usability, navigation and functionality.
