"From our experience, even what may seem like a minor injury or just a brief hospital stay can lead to financial difficulties and increased mental stress."
- Phil Jeynes, head of individual protection at MetLife UK
Of those surveyed (3,021), almost three quarters (74%) reported that a previous injury from an accident had affected their mental health.
“Accidents can cause unforeseen physical, mental, and financial damage, significantly affecting not just the individuals but their loved ones too. We emphasise protecting everyday life – those moments when you trip and break a bone or end up in hospital because of an accident or illness,” explained Phil Jeynes, head of individual protection at MetLife UK.
In terms of how those with accident-related injuries were affected, more than a fifth (22%) felt frustrated, followed by stressed or anxious (19%), and depressed (14%). Moreover, 14% said their injury made them lose sleep, while 13% felt mentally or physically exhausted, or found it hard to cope (12%).
24% those who required a hospital stay said having to take time off work was their biggest concern, closely followed by needing to take unpaid leave (17%) and not being home with their children (16%).
Worryingly, 17% said they relied on their savings after sustaining an injury, and 9% turned to credit cards or their overdraft. Although 62% have protection insurance, only 7% have personal injury cover and the same percentage for accident and sickness.
“From our experience, even what may seem like a minor injury or just a brief hospital stay can lead to financial difficulties and increased mental stress. This holistic view of wellbeing is why we support comprehensive protection, allowing people to confidently live the life they love,” he concluded.
