LV= paid out nearly £152 million in protection claims in 2025, accepting 95% of claims across life insurance, critical illness and income protection.

The mutual says it supported over 8,000 people and their families in the last year, as the total paid in protection claims rose by £15 million from 2024.

£18.1 million was paid out in income protection (IP) claims, with 37% being for musculoskeletal issues, 20% for cancer, 14% for mental health and 4% for gynaecological conditions.

In addition, LV= paid just under £68,000 in parent and child cover claims in 2025. This is something that is built into LV’s IP offering and provides parents with a lump sum payment of up to £25,000 if their child is diagnosed with one of 54 listed conditions.

LV= also paid £105,000 in death benefit claims to families who lost a loved one and a further £80,000 was paid in fracture cover claims.

Critical illness claims totalled almost £33 million in 2025, covering 444 individuals and their families, with the highest claim payment being £1.2 million. 60% of claims were related to cancer, 12% were for heart attack and 6% were for stroke. The most common cancer type was breast at 34%, followed by prostate at 10% and bowel at 9%.

£804,000 was also paid out in children’s critical illness claims for 32 children diagnosed with a serious illness, with cancer being the most common claim.

The total paid out in personal sick pay claims reached £4.3 million: 50% of these were for musculoskeletal issues, 10% were for fractures, 7% were for coughs, colds, flu and sore throats, and 5% were for cancer. The youngest claimant was 17 years old.

In terms of life claims, LV= paid out 98%, equating to £80 million and covering 5,500 families. The highest payment was £1.1 million.

Cancer made up 40% of all life claims, while heart-related conditions accounted for 18%, respiratory conditions for 11% and stroke for 4%. The average claimant age was 66, although the youngest claimant was 26 years old.

Regarding the 95% of claims paid overall in 2025, LV= says that of the 5% that were declined, most were due to misrepresentation or non-disclosure at application, including smoking status, alcohol consumption and inaccuracies relating to medical history.

"Our 2025 claims experience reflects both the scale of support we provide and the importance of protection in delivering financial resilience," Anna Rogers, head of underwriting and claims at LV=, said.

"We are particularly pleased to have supported so many customers and their families, with a record level of claims paid during the year.

"Income protection in particular continues to play a vital role, not only through regular claim payments, but through the additional features and support it offers when customers need it most. Behind every claim is an individual and their family facing challenging circumstances, and our focus remains on providing practical, timely and compassionate support.

"Transparency is also key. While we are proud of the proportion of claims paid, it is important to clearly communicate the reasons why some claims are not met, reinforcing the importance of accurate disclosure at application. We want to help people continue to live financially confident lives."
