"The FCA has been clear that the protection gap starts with adults who never consider protection at all. Those adults are already asking AI assistants about mortgages, children and money."

Subcontext has announced that it will now distribute protection products for insurers and brokers inside ChatGPT and Claude.
With a Subcontext integration enabled, insurers and distributors can use conversational AI to sell to an insurance prospect. Consumers can ask an insurer's assistant inside ChatGPT or Claude about life cover, receive a price based on product rules, check eligibility, have an exclusion explained and book a callback.
Whole-of-market protection distributors who want to use AI can access their panel through Subcontext's integration with Iress' The Exchange.
In July, the FCA published the Mills Review into AI and the future of retail financial services. It identified AI, including agents acting on a consumer's behalf, as a route to closing the protection gap, but was clear that autonomy must come with oversight, accountability and governance.
One month later, the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) called for practical training on AI for boards, risk functions and customer-facing professionals in insurance and personal finance, after it identified a 'critical AI fluency gap' that it warned could undermine responsible adoption.
"Consumers who do not want to buy protection over the phone are underserved by today's protection market because traditional distribution cannot profitably deliver a quick, easy purchase," Alain Desmier, co-founder of Subcontext, said.
"Conversational AI changes that because it opens new ways to distribute protection on the communication channels consumers prefer to use."
"The FCA has been clear that the protection gap starts with adults who never consider protection at all," he continued. "Those adults are already asking AI assistants about mortgages, children and money. There are 31 million adults without pure protection in the UK, and we are building the technology that lets our clients serve them in that AI conversation."
Mike Laming, co-founder and CTO at Subcontext, added: "We've built the agentic insurance stack that sits on top of large language model (LLM) infrastructure to define and distribute protection products on ChatGPT and Claude with governance built in.
"The journey appears within an insurance business's own brand and also through messaging channels like WhatsApp."
