Jo Miller, Managing Director at the IPTF

10.  IPTF calls on UK government to collaborate with the protection market for reform of “already creaking welfare support services”

The Income Protection Task Force drew attention during the year by publicly calling on the UK government to work more closely with the protection market as part of its planned welfare reform. In an open letter responding to proposals to save £5bn from the welfare system, the IPTF warned that changes risked placing further strain on already stretched support services unless reform was approached in a more collaborative and considered way.

The article set out the IPTF’s argument that long term sickness and disability were a major driver of welfare costs and that rising levels of mental health conditions had intensified pressure on the system. The taskforce said income protection insurance could play a more meaningful role, not only by providing financial support but by delivering vocational rehabilitation, early intervention and return to work services that help people regain employment and reduce reliance on state benefits.
